2017 Canadian A Royal Platinum 70th Wedding Anniversary Celebration Proof Silver Coin
On November 20, 2017, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary. It is an extraordinary milestone that is traditionally celebrated with the gift of platinum. Fittingly, the Royal Canadian Mint marks the occasion with a special keepsake, whose reverse includes an especially meaningful element—one inspired by an exquisite gift given 70 years ago. The reverse brings together a number of deeply symbolic elements—especially the “border,” which is based on the platinum-set bracelet given to Her Majesty by His Royal Highness on their wedding day. Lustre colour technology mimics the sparkling beauty of the diamond bracelet. Vibrant colours highlight select engraved elements for maximum visual impact. Painstakingly struck in a superb proof finish, each engraved detail basks in the highly polished, mirror-like shine of 99.99% pure silver.
Designed by Canadian artist Derek Wicks, the reverse design artfully combines symbolic elements to express Canada’s well wishes to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, and His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on their 70th wedding anniversary. A sumptuous colour application over detailed engraving places a special emphasis on the Royal Cypher (EP) and St. Edward’s Crown; both are flanked by decorative scrollwork that comes together in the shape of a tiara, with a prominent maple leaf to pay tribute to the Canadian Crown. The vibrant blue hue of the garter sash provides a colourful backdrop for the engraved double dates “1947” and “2017” that mark this Royal Platinum Anniversary. Fittingly, the geometric motif encircling the design is inspired by Her Majesty’s platinum-set bracelet, which was gifted to her by His Royal Highness on their wedding day (November 20, 1947). This artistic rendering of the Royal jewel is further enhanced by lustre colour technology, which evokes the scintillating beauty of diamonds and adds a regal sparkle to our numismatic celebration. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
